Framing the Narrative: Photographs from the Permanent Collection

Framing the Narrative: Photographs from the Permanent Collection exhibits photographs selected from the Tyler Museum of Art’s photography collection. Each artist presented in the exhibition uses different styles and methods of photography. Their compositions depicts unique and relatable presentations of people, landscapes, and animals.

The exhibition is currently open, and it will close on January 8, 2023.

Texas! Collection Swap with the Grace Museum Exhibition

The Grace Museum Collection Swap exhibition features various artworks that range in medium, style, and art movements. The selection of artwork celebrates many artists who are also part of the Tyler Museum of Art’s permanent collection.  

The exhibition is currently open, and it will close on November 27th, 2022.

Educational Activities and Events


Family Day: In Person

The Tyler Museum of Art’s Family Day program is held every second Saturday of the month from 2:00pm – 4:00pm at the museum. The event will have art activities for children and students of all ages, art books to read for all ages, coloring pages of the museum’s permanent collection, and snacks. All art activities are compliant with the TEKS. Additionally, all Family Day participants will get free admission to the exhibitions. 

For November, the art activity will be a three-dimensional paper leaf wreath in celebration of Thanksgiving and the Fall season. The event will be held at the museum on November 12th, 2022 between 2:00pm – 4:00pm.

TMA Lesson Plans for Elementary, Middle School, and High School


Lesson Plan:

David Bates’s Magnolia and Lemon

This lesson plan contains the Texas TEKS for Elementary, Middle, and High School art teachers. Students will learn about David Bates’ use of abstraction, Modernism, and still life in his composition Magnolia and Lemon. Afterwards, the students will create Styrofoam prints of a composed still life. Then, the prints will be painted using watercolors.

Elements and Principles of Design

This lesson plan defines each of the principles and elements of design. Art examples of each element and principle are included with the vocabulary words. The artworks used in the lesson are from the Tyler Museum of Art’s permanent collection.

Student Exhibitions

2022 Day of the Dead Art Exhibition

The Day of the Dead Middle School Art Exhibition is an annual event held at the TMA. Students between the grade levels of 5th grade – 8th grade are eligible to create artworks in their classrooms that celebrate the cultural festivities of Día de los Muertos.

The exhibition is free and currently open to the public until November 6, 2022. The museum will hold a reception for the event on November 5, 2022 at 2:00pm. All students, families, and teachers are invited to the art reception.

This year, 22 schools, 29 teachers, and a total of 680 students in the East Texas area participated in the 2022 Middle School Day of the Dead Exhibition.

  • The grade level of the visiting students;
  • The number of students who will attend;
  • And, three days in your class schedule that are available for the tour.
