Every year, the Tyler Museum of Art holds a student exhibition for 5th through 8th grade middle school students in the East Texas area. The goal of the exhibition is for students to learn about the cultural festivities of Día de los Muertos. Then, the students create artworks that exhibit the cultural iconography of the holiday. When the artworks are completed, the teachers will select the pieces that will be exhibited in the Education Gallery.
This year, we had 28 schools, 31 teachers, and a total of 731 students from 5 counties in the East Texas area who participated in the exhibition. Their work ranged from three-dimensional ofrendas to two-dimensional compositions that depict the iconography and art historical themes of Día de los Muertos.
