20th Annual High School Art Exhibition: Elements and Principles of Design
For the past 20 years, the Tyler Museum of Art has exhibited high school artwork from students in the East Texas area. This lesson examines selected artwork from the 20th Annual High School Art Exhibition to discuss how each piece expresses the Elements and Principles of Design. This lesson was written by Daedalus Boney, a Spring 2024 UT Tyler Intern. It was edited by Rachel Anthony, the Education Manager at the Tyler Museum of Art.

This lesson plan contains the National Learning Standards for Visual Arts and the Texas TEKS for Elementary, Middle, and High School art teachers. Students will study the abstract painting methods found in Helen Gerardia’s painting Orbit II. Then, the students will create their own abstract painting. Afterwards, the class will write a companion artist statement that explains how they developed the composition and what they learned from Gerardia’s painting process.
